Global equity markets followed a strong third quarter with positive returns in the fourth quarter, as most major global indices ended the year with gains. Developed marketsoutside the US led equity returns, followed  by global REITs.

Global equity markets retreated in the second quarter, giving up much of their gains for the year. Fiscal and economic strain in Europe continued to capture headlines, weighing especially heavy on non-US markets. Investors continued to turn to US government bonds for safety, pushing yields lower.

What a great first quarter for the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 8.1%, its highest level since 2007. The S&P 500 jumped 12% and the NASDAQ climbed 18.7%. Stock markets from Tokyo to Frankfurt all posted their strongest quarterly gains in several years.
